Freeze dried strawberries, 200g
Freeze dried strawberry pieces, 200g
In general we prefer to use naturally dehydrated ingredients rather than freeze dried ones, but strawberries don't really seem to dehydrate very well. In this case the freeze drying process really locks in their delicious tangy sweetness. Higher in calorie count than their friend the raspberry, but a little lower in fibre.
This is another of those ingredients that we think is seriously overpriced in supermarkets. Since we buy them in ridiculous bulk anyway, we figured it wasn't much extra effort to bag them down. Hopefully this way anyone that wants to can buy dried strawberries at a sensible price :-)
We particularly love these in breakfasts - they combine brilliantly with nuts, seeds and other berries for a muesli mix, or with coconut milk powder to give a creamy porridge with an occasional sweet zing when you munch on a strawberry piece.
If you're a chocoholic, they're also amazing mixed in with just about any chocolate dessert. Possible tricky if you're on an expedition somewhere, but if forward planning or the facilities allow.......
